Artist Statement:
Cristina Montero graduated from the School of Art and Design at the Catholic University of Chile in 1969. She works and has resided in Washington, DC since 1984 and is a docent at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Cristina's work has been shown in individual and collective exhibitions in the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Chile. She has had numerous commissions by corporations and individual collectors and by the State Department of the United States for the embassy in Chile and the U.S. Interest Office in Havana, Cuba.
She collaborated with cabinetmaker Kevin Kopel in the production of wood and canvas screens presented at the 2000 International Furniture Fair in New York.
Her works include fiber pieces and paintings on free canvas with great emphasis on color and design. Her recent works focus on refined compositions with oriental undertones that are deeply spiritual and meditative.
