Adiante Franszoon

New Artist!

Artist Statement:

Baltimore resident Adiante Franszoon learned woodcarving in the Afrodiasporic tradition of his ancestors, growing up in Suriname in a village established by former enslaved Africans in the early 1700s. He incorporates his own interpretations of the Saamacca maroon style of woodcarving into wall art, mirror and picture frames, tabletops, and carved doors. He applies a free style and love of wood, creating mosaic wood jewelry, charcuterie boards, and tables. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and elsewhere.
